Nomadic Dolgan reindeer herders

The tundra between the Taymyr Peninsula and Yakutia’s Anabar District is home to the Dolgan indigenous people. While many live by searching for mammoth tusks, fishing or hunting the 1 million wild reindeer that migrate through the region, many still live a very traditional lifestyle as nomadic reindeer herders, dressing in traditional reindeer fur clothing and migrating hundreds of kilometres each year on reindeer sledges. They live in wooden cabins built on sledge runners and covered in reindeer furs. During migrations the reindeer pull the entire home. They are the northernmost reindeer herders in the world and their environment is one of the most extreme in the world, with felt temperatures sometimes reaching -100 Centigrade in bad snow storms. Travellers who make it this far north in winter should not be surprised if they see the Northern Lights every single night!
