Baliem Valley Mummies

Some villages in West Papua‘s Baliem Valley have preserved mummies of great former chiefs. They are not kept in museums or behind glass but just sit in village huts and can be brought out on request! The one pictured below is one of the closest to Wamena (the biggest town in the Baliem Valley). It is located in the village of Sumpaima near Jiwika and is easily accessed by regular public minivans from Wamena that take 45 minutes to get there.
