Moning

Moning is the first village in Yali country you get to after crossing the mountains from Kiroma in West Papua‘s Baliem Valley. It is about 6 hours’ walk here from Kiroma and another 6 on to Ninia where there is a grass air strip with irregular flights to Dekai and Wamena. From Ninia a trek can be continued to Sobaham and from there on to Waniyok, Angguruk and potentially Kosarek and Mek Country for those with a lot of time on their hands!

Resting spot under a cliff overhang on the way from Kiroma to Moning

If you want to break the trek to Moning there is a place halfway up the mountain side when coming from Kiroma which locals use as a place to sleep and cook (pictured above). There’s straw all over the ground so it’s quite comfy but gets quite cold at night despite being under an overhang in the cliff. Sleeping bag required.
